About the event
Kath Williams, a dedicated professional social worker, has a profound commitment to supporting Third Culture Kids (TCKs) as they navigate their unique experiences and thrive. Currently serving as a Third Culture Kid Advocate within two mission organizations in Australia, Kath brings over 20 years of expertise working with children and teens.
Her diverse background includes collaborating with Indigenous communities, foster children, and community campsites. Additionally, Kath spent two years in Cambodia, contributing to the student support team at Hope International School and volunteering with the local international church youth group.
Together with Tanya, Kath embarked on a three-year journey of research, writing, and preparation for their book, Thongs or Flip-Flops? Australian Kids Overseas and What Comes Next (2024). This insightful work sheds light on the experiences of approximately one million Australian citizens living outside their home country. Whether sent abroad for work, part of military families, or pursuing opportunities overseas, these Australian kids grow up as “Third Culture Kids.” Their re-entry into Australia often presents unexpected challenges, shaped by their memories and emotional connections from other places and communities.
Thongs or Flip-Flops? offers valuable insights for Australian TCKs and their families, bridging the gap between cultures and fostering understanding. It’s a must-read for anyone navigating the complexities of cross-cultural upbringing and identity.
